Bedtime social media use may be harming UK teenagers, study says

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/feb/22/bedtime-social-media-use-may-be-harming-uk-teenagers-study-says

Teenagers in Britain may be putting their health and education at risk by spending too much time on social media at bedtime, according to a major study by academics at the University of Glasgow into adolescent sleep habits.

I think this is worth a look and some feedback on the content.

Can you recognise the pattern in your own children if you are a parent? Do you agree, disagree, partly agree with the findings?

Very interesting.

  1. In my opinion social media is a problem irrespective of the time of day it is. I appreciate that it affects sleep which then can cause poor performance at school but in general I feel it can affect someone's mental health as it's a platform for all sorts of adverts, bullying and people portraying a life they perhaps don't lead. Children get offended by what they read and I believe social media creates a lot of problems for kids.

  2. Thanks for these comments Lorraine. The results are pretty alarming but may not be too surprising. You raise some really nicely framed points. This article, the sub-stories surrounding it, the results and our own perceptions of social media provide plenty talking points which we will no doubt see through various comments.

  3. This is a good article but I think if it wasn't social media it would just be something else. Lorraine makes a good point regarding the problems that occur on social media platforms such as bullying etc and I think these companies have a duty and responsibility to improve how their systems are monitored and deal with users who abuse the privilege of social networking.

Back to the article, if kids are spending too much time on social media, why are they on social media? Probably too broad an answer to squeeze on to a blog post, but when you walk down the street and see signs saying NO BALL GAMES and community centres closed down due to lack of funding or adequately trained staff, the opportunity for other pursuits are significantly reduced, so back to the games consoles and social media our teenagers flock.
