Round Three presentations, more success

Hello all,

Today we had another wide range of topics that were delivered, with every person in the session passing, so well done one and all.

The subjects analysed were Smoking, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, BRCA, Breast Cancer, Kidney Failure, ME, Children's Oral Health, IBS and Schizophrenia.

I really enjoyed the presentations again and crucially, (like all attendees), learned lots.

One thing is for sure, you have all (in the three sessions) stepped up and delivered some exceptionally strong presentations, and as an assessor, I cannot ask for any more in terms of commitment and standards.

For those who delivered today, please lend your thoughts in the comments box below as always.

I will see you all next week where we will use the first hour of the class to reflect on the presentation assessment. In the second half I will tidy up any assessments not already passed with any luck.

Great stuff and I look forward to seeing you all next Thursday as a whole class, it’s been a while!

  2. I believed i would fail, thought i had no chance of passing due to nerves and being rubbish at solo talks in high school. Having passed is a big achievement for me and im proud as punch! Thanks for guiding me through it Mark.

    1. I’m proud of you too. You thought carefully about the talk, the links between the important points, took your time and delivered. Confidence building is so important and all class members are developing a range of skills all the time. Here’s a wee bit of advice that I think is important to consider. Believe in yourself, and the rest will fall into place. I think Professor Pausch would probably have agreed with that sentiment. Well done again and thank you for your kind and measured words. I merely facilitated the learning, you delivered the goods! Cheers, Mark

  3. Well done everyone for successfully completing yet another assessment. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habbit" Aristotle.
    Keep up the good work

Thanks Mark for your cool demeanor, which helps tremendously when we are are under pressure and unsure of what is required to pass. Good time keeping..Can not wait for next assessment already..

  5. Thanks Simbi, that’s very nice of you to say! Well you did have the criteria of what was asked, but granted, I know what you mean, anything can happen on the day with performance led assessments! The overriding factors for success in the the sessions, without a shadow of a doubt, were structure and preparation. Clear to see across all 24 talks that were assessed. That’s a lot of time as well! I’m looking forward to Thursday’s class and hearing all the reflections. Nice way to finish the year I’d say! See you then and thanks for your great comments as always. Writing comes next, but not until 2019.

  6. Almost a week on and I have concluded that whilst I genuinely enjoy solo presentations this one was the most difficult to date. Some people can cope fine personalising a talk while for me it was very difficult. I've never experienced nerves like that. I won't shy away from it in the future though. Thanks Mark for the immediate feedback which helps immensely.

  7. It’s never too late to reflect. You did really well and this is a theme we can explore in the session today. I think with talks especially, that it is important to deliver the feedback on the day. This isn’t possible, or as quickly certainly, with other types of assessment. Thanks for your critique as always, and I’ll see you this afternoon. All the best, Mark

  8. Won't lie was so nervous presenting my presentation, can't seem to control the nerves. But I feel I have came on since the first class in communications which I dreaded (sorry Mark) lol big thanks to you Mark because you've helped improve my confidence with speaking in public.

    1. Thanks Sharon. Well only you can deliver the talk, so you put a strategy in place. You did lots of research, reworked the content and structure of your slides and really thought about what you wanted to achieve. Working with me is predominantly about developing confidence, making mistakes along the way and developing lots of new and important skills. You’re doing very well indeed and glad you don’t dread Communication! Learning can always be fun, this much we know! See you this afternoon and thanks for your measured comments as always. Mark
