Thank you to Kathleen who alerted me to this story. She quite rightly thought it would be a good discussion point for the blog.

  1. Thabks Mark first of all I think staff levels should have been looked into I don't think she was fit to be in the delivery room to make decisions due to being on a 24 hour shift. I also believe that she should be held responsible for what happened in the delivery room she didn't explain to the mum what had happened and lead the mother to believe her son died of natural causes it was another doctor that told her what had happened.
I feel that she has kept her job without further training maybe she should go and get further training and the nmc defo should be doing further investigation

  2. I remeber hearing of this at the time. Based on those articles I can't see how anyone else would be to blame other than the Doctor in question.

Clearly there has been a catalouge of errors but the Doctor must take repsonsibilty for own her actions. If the Doctor chose to work beyond her hours and on top of that, it was her decision to carry on with a regular delivery, those two actions alone look like poor judgement regardless of any other factors.

I think of our discussion in class the other day with the Nurse from America, her intentions were good but a major breach of regulations and therefore she was punished accordingly. I think the same principles should apply here.

  3. A tragic story indeed and I simply can't imagine what the parents went through and obviously are still enduring. This also brings to light the working hours permitted by the NHS. These should not only be on paper but practical too. After a 24hr shift noone is mentally prepared for such a medically demanding task. Decision making becomes rushed and not thorough.I suppose as healthcare professionals' they are meant to deal with every case or answer when called but obviously she made a bad call which cost a poor baby's life and caused unwanted grief/ loss to the parents, which was avoidable.Permitted working hours must be adhered to and staffs wellbeing must be upheld too. Its a shame!

  4. The themes of 'responsibility and accountability' are coming through clearly in your respective thoughts. Please keep the reflections coming on this very serious news story.
